Workers attached to the Shengli Engineering and construction limited a company contracted to tarmac the Kigumba-Kabwoya-Kagadi Kyenjojo road have laid down their tools following a delayed payment of their salaries.
Workers say that they are demanding the company salary arrears for July and August and that they have for several occasions been told to leave work and go home without money with deductions of NSSF which is not also credited to their accounts.
However, one of the administrators who was only identified as Arthur, asked the demonstrators to calm down as they sort out issues related to salaries since it has not been their fault to delay the payments but rather UNRA.
Arthur further says that NSSF for the whole year has been processed and it is on the table for approval but asked workers to first focus on salaries not NSSF as they can’t be done at ago.
Godwin Tashobya the Shengli Engineering and Construction limited Public Relations Officer said that delays came as a result from the delayed disbursements from the Uganda National Roads Authority but assured the staff that funds have been released and only remaining is disbursement to staff personal accounts.
The Kigumba-Masindi-Hoima-Kagadi-Kyenjojo road is funded by a loan from the World Bank International Development Association towards the Albertine Region sustainable Development Project and it was expected to be complete by 31 July 2019 but it is still work in progress.
