Muziizi river encroachment escalates, RDC sets ultimatum for eviction Kagadi

Kagadi District Resident District Commissioner Lillian Ruteraho has set an ultimatum of one week for the eviction and clearing of all those who encroached on the river banks of Muziizi.

RDC Lillian Ruteraho during a stakeholders’ meeting for 3 Sub Counties of Muhorro, Kyaterekera, Bwikara and Ndaiga held in Kyaterekera trading Centre said that all those who are having activities in the wetlands should vacate as soon as possible before the team comes in to implement the president’s directive of gazetting all wetlands in the country.

RDC further said that the government has invested over shillings 439 billion for the construction of Muziizi dam and therefore they have to protect the river and its tributaries in order to maintain the water levels for the sustainability of the project.

In the meeting attended by the district security team and the technical staff, Hadali Kosayi the OC Station Kagadi CPS said that police will use the necessary force to implement the order and thus asked people to leave the river before they come in.

However, as usual, residents who have gardens and other activities in the river catchment areas or buffer zones expressed unhappiness with the order saying that their families will not have food once this order is implemented.

Residents who live nearby the river Muziizi have extended their activities up to the water something threatening government thus it is constructing a multi-billion dam project.

The 48 MW Muziizi Hydro Power project is to be developed by Uganda Electricity Generation Company Ltd (UEGCL) and is located on River Muzizi covering districts of Kagadi, Kyenjonjo, Kabarole and Ntoroko on a cost of Euros 120 billion and it is estimated to affect over 829 people.
